History & definitions
Berners-Lee coined the term The Semantic Web in 2001. A universal medium for data, information and knowledge exchange — easily understood by computers and people alike. Data is structured through applying commonly accepted principles and technologies. E.g. Resource Description Framework (RDF); Web Ontology Language (OWL). The principles and technologies aim at providing formal descriptions of concepts, terms and relationships within a given knowledge domain.
